First deworming should be carried out at about 2-3 months of age, and a benzimidazole drug is recommended to ensure efficacy against ascarids. Second deworming is recommended just before weaning (approximately 4-6 months of age). Foals should receive a minimum of four anthelmintic treatments during the first year of life. Deworming should be done every 60 days to prevent round worms that migrate through the foal’s intestinal wall, liver and lungs, predisposing them to pneumonia and other disease. At 4-5 months, a fecal egg count should be done to track the occurrence of ascarids versus strongyles. Treat for ascarids with fenbendazole (Panacur) or oxibendazole (Anthelcide). Treat with ivermectin for strongyles at approximately 5 months.
