Antibiotics will be needed to treat the bacterial infection caused by the aspiration pneumonia. If your vet obtained a fluid sample from your puppy’s lungs, they will prescribe an antibiotic to target the specific type of bacteria in the lungs.
Can a dog get pneumonia at home?If your vet is suspicious of a fungal cause of pneumonia, they will start your dog on anti-fungal medications as well. If your dog’s pneumonia is mild and your vet feels it can adequately be managed at home, your dog can recover in the comfort of their own bed.
How long does it take for a dog to recover from pneumonia?Dogs with pneumonia need to be on antibiotics and it typically may take up to 3 days for owners to see signs of improvement. Common antibiotics prescribed include Clavamox and Baytril which cover a very wide range of bacterial pneumonia organisms. Before being sent home, many dogs are hospitalized and given antibiotics intravenously.
How do you treat pneumonia in neonates?Treatment with erythromycin 12.5 mg/kg orally every 6 hours for 14 days or azithromycin 20 mg/kg orally/IV once a day for 3 days typically resolves the pneumonia. Occasionally, however, a second course may be necessary ( see Table: Recommended Dosages of Selected Oral Antibiotics for Neonates* ).
