The Caldor Fire ignited near Little Mountain between Omo Ranch and Grizzly Flats just before 7 p.m. By 9 p.m. on Aug. 16, the community of Grizzly Flats was under evacuation warnings. At this point, the fire had already burned about 2,261 acres, according to previous Cal Fire incident reports. Over 800 homes were threatened by the blaze.
How did the Caldor fire affect Lake Tahoe?Since starting on Aug. 14, the Caldor fire has consumed more than 200,000 acres of land, bringing down more than 900 buildings along its path. As it moved closer to Lake Tahoe, fire officials tried desperately to control its flow before it wreaked more havoc.
Will Caldor go up in flames?Last year, Caldor was one of three devastating fires in the region that started on federal land and burned more than a million acres. Candance Tyler fears unless the Forest Service follows through on their promises, more towns like Grizzly Flats will go up in flames. What caused the Caldor fire and the Dixie fire?The cause of the Caldor fire remains under investigation while the Dixie fire was potentially caused by faulty equipment belonging to the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. However, Cal Fire statistics state that some 95% of wildfires are caused by human activity including electrical failures, campfires, debris burning, smoking and arson.
