Many qualifications (but not all) have a UCAS Tariff value, which will vary dependent on the qualification size, and the grade you achieved. This numerical value is used by HE course providers to assess whether you meet their entry requirements for a particular course. How are UCAS Tariff points used?
How do I know how many UCAS points my qualifications are worth? Each qualification (e.g. A-level, Scottish Higher etc.) is allocated a size band value from 1-4, based on the number of learning hours. Each qualification is also allocated a grade band point from 3-14. To work out the number of Ucas points your qualifications is worth, just multiply the two together: Size x grade = Tariff points
Do you need tariff points to get into a university?"Some universities use tariff points for entry requirements, whereas others will be more specific about the specific qualification and grades they are asking for. If you do need to meet a certain number of tariff points then check the Ucas tariff point calculator to make sure you’ve got the right number of points," Courteney adds.
When did UCAS change the points system?UCAS revamped the original tariff to a single points system which included the majority of post-16 academic qualifications (including the allocation of points to Advanced GNVQS and Key Skills). This change applied to students starting courses in 2002. Additional post-16 qualifications were allocated points after this date.
